Attractions and Excursions in Sharm el Sheik, Egypt

The desert: ferociously blazing, deeply silent, apparently empty. Majestic and imposing in its simplicity. The sea: crystalline, with its million hues of blue, its fertile, healthy marine life, unpolluted, a triumph of nature. A holiday in the area isn’t complete without a visit to the desert, whether to a natural location; to one of the unexpected, hidden historical sites scattered throughout this crossroad of civilisations that has been for centuries the Red Sea, or to the natural marvels of the sea itself. In Sharm el Sheik, many excursions can be done to some outstanding sights. Here is a selection of the most interesting places in the area.

Mount Sinai

Serabit El Khadim

St Katherine

Color Canyon

Feiran Oasis

Nawamis

Abu Galum

Nabq Protected Area

St Katherine Park

Ras Mohammed

Organised Excursions from Sharm el Sheikh

The Sharm el Sheikh area is a place rich in historical sites and natural beauty. Your hotel will be able to organise for you guided or non-guided visits to some of these sights. Here is a selection of interesting excursions from Sharm el Sheikh.

Abu Galum Protected Area

The area of Abu Galum is Bedouin territory, and is reachable only with off road vehicles. Organised excursions to the area take you to the amazing sights of desert and sea in a totally wild environment. The only inhabitants are Bedouins, living in huts by the beach.

Monastery of St. Katherine and Mount Moses

The excursion to this historical site is a definitive must in Sinai. It is a very interesting full day excursion. Sometimes the tour includes also the climbing to the top of Mount Moses. In this case, the excursion starts in the middle of the night, to be able to reach the top of the mountain by sunrise. The climbing to Mount Moses is relatively easy, as it is done via a quite smooth path, but you need to be reasonably fit to enrol in it, as it takes about two hours to reach the top. Once on top, the view of the sun rising among the mountains is stunning.

Ras Mohammed National Park

The first and most famous of all national parks in the Red Sea, Ras Mohammed is a paradise both on land and by sea. All hotels, diving and aqua centres in Sharm organise full day excursions to the park. The options are by land or by sea. In the first case, you will be taken to one of the idyllic beaches where you will be able to swim and snorkel by fascinating coral reefs. By sea, the boat will take you to some quiet bay to enjoy swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear waters. These excursions are normally guided, and can be done either on a half day or a full day basis.

Other excursions are also possible, just ask your hotel’s guest relations desk. They will be able to direct you or hire a car or a cab for you.
