Attractions and Excursions in Hamata/Berenice, Egypt

The desert: ferociously blazing, deeply silent, apparently empty. Majestic and imposing in its simplicity. The sea: crystalline, with its million hues of blue, its fertile, healthy marine life, unpolluted, a triumph of nature. A holiday in the area isn’t complete without a visit to the desert, whether to a natural location; to one of the unexpected, hidden historical sites scattered throughout this crossroad of civilisations that has been for centuries the Red Sea, or to the natural marvels of the sea itself. In Hamata/Berenice, many excursions can be done to some outstanding sights. Here is a selection of the most interesting places in the area.

Emerald Mines

Bir Umm Fawakhir

Temple of Seti I

Wadi Hammamat

Organised Excursions from Hamata/Berenice

The Hamata/Berenice area is a place rich in historical sites and natural beauty. Your hotel will be able to organise for you guided or non-guided visits to some of these sights. Here is a selection of interesting excursions from Hamata/Berenice.

Luxor

Many people choose to combine a relaxing holiday by the Red Sea with the sights of Ancient Egypt and the era of the pharaohs. Excursions to Luxor from Hamata/Berenice are available by bus. The most popular excursion to Luxor is on a full day basis, with an early morning departure, but you also have the choice to spend a night in Luxor and see the awesome sights over two days.

Wadi el Gemal National Park

The stunning Wadi el Gemal National Park is one of the most recent additions to the high number of parks and protected areas of the Red Sea. At only half an hour drive by bus, the park has a very well organised eco-lodge which offers guided tours of the wadi with camel or by foot. The lodge has also a cinema where you will be shown a documentary about the park, its nature, geology and inhabitants, the ancient nomadic tribes of the Bishari and the Ababde. Finally, you will seat in the exotic, desert-elegant main “fustat”, adorned with antiques and local handicrafts, and served breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the type of excursion you join.

Other excursions are also possible, just ask your hotel’s guest relations desk. They will be able to direct you or hire a car or a cab for you.
