Hurghada is the Red Sea top destination for wind and kitesurf, and recently is also picking up as a great wake-boarding destination. Windsurfers were coming here before there was an international airport. Nowadays it is a well established resort for windsurfers, divers and sun worshippers with the airport only 10 minutes away, and a wide range of board sports schools are to be found in town. Hurghada offers wind throughout the year, with some of the best in the summer. The wind in the Red Sea is created by the difference in temperature between the land and sea. In Hurghada this is accelerated by the mountain range and by Giftun Island offshore. It will generally pick up during the day and can often start early and sometimes blow all day. This, in addition to the coast which is generally flat and without fringing reefs, creates perfect conditions both for wind and kite surfing. Many international competitions are held in Hurghada every year – one of the most populars being the fun-filled Splash Cup at Tommy Friedl’s centre, who also organises great kite safaris to the deep south, seeking the ultimate perfect kite beach in pure wilderness. In addition to this, hotels and resorts in Hurghada offer a large choice of less extreme and more relaxed watersports and sea related activities, from banana rides to snorkelling excursions to the awesome marine park of Giftun Island, pedal boats, canoeing, catamarans, glass-bottom boats and submarines. Some resorts offer also parasailing. |
